Android One – what it means for us, vendors and google !

First set of android one phones released in India. Source : Google

Google, yesterday at a event in Mumbai announced new range of smartphones under ‘Android One’ banner which enables domestic handset vendors sell hardwares using google reference design and regular operating system updates from Google directly like it’s nexus line of smartphones but with one key difference – price.

Since Android One programme is aimed at countries like India, Philippines, Bangladesh  where smartphone penetration though growing at a massive rate still distributed lesser than feature phones, they are priced very competitvely.

The first set of Android phones announced here were  Spice Dream Uno, Karbonn Sparkle V and Micromax’s Canvas A1 priced INR 6,299, 6,399 and 6,499 respectively which is close to US $ 100. Since they all share the same reference design by google, they all share same hardware except for some customisations in enclosures.

Review ASMedia 1042, Cheap USB 3.0 Express card for your Macbook Pro, Hackintosh

Review of ASMedia 1042 controller, Cheap USB 3.0 Express card for your Macbook Pro, Hackintosh

I bought a cheap USB 3.0 Express card for my Macbook Pro which did not have a USB 3.0 by default like it’s latest iterations. So I needed an USB 3.0 express card as I wanted to leverage better Data Transfer Rate from my 1Terabyte Seagate Go Flex External HDD with STAE 104 USB 3.0 Adapter. My Go Flex HDD came with a USB 2.0 so I made a gamble by buying the express card first, testing it with USB 2.0 and then moving to USB 3.0. Everything went picture perfect and I’ll tell you how you can upgrade your old MBP or Hackbook to USB 3.0, Read on.

You need an Express card with ASMedia 1042 Chip to work on OSX. I bought USB 3.0 2 Port Express Card 54mm Notebook Adapter BC398 from Amazon for $10.37, though the previous versions of it had NEC USB 3.0 Controller mine had ASMedia 1042 Controller (even the cd had NEC drivers !), So confirm that your Express card has ASMedia 1042 before buying it.

Note : USB 3.0 Kexts should be installed, up & functioning in your OS X for  the steps below.

I have included the Amazon link of an express card with ASM 1042 controller above. The card I bought was semi flush-fit (i.e though it fit perfect, it needed some superglue to fix it in place). Make sure you buy the right size 54mm (or) 34mm supported by your MBP/hackintosh laptop. Also if you are planning to use your  Bus powered External HDD with USB 3.0 it would need external power supply to work, so your best bet is to get an express card which supports external power supply through USB like mine shown below (Also like the card shown above).
Here are the benchmarks of ASM 1042 USB 3.0 on OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2 with Seagate Goflex 1Terabyte external HDD with USB 2.0/USB 3.0 adapter cable.
As you can see from the above benchmarks even USB 2.0 device performs better on this ASM USB3.0 express card and with USB 3.0 adapter cable my Goflex HDD gave me nearly twice the performance considering the bottle-neck of an PCI powered Express card slot which can provide only 5.0 Gb/sec at an maximum, the double increase in Read/Write speeds are consistent with realtime performance of  USB 3.0 devices on native USB 3.0 slots of modern laptops.
Any queries regarding this or suggestion can be posted in comments and you can also ask me though my twitter/facebook page.

Flock -Review and Browser Knockdown

Hiya friends am back, was busy for past few days…well since am back, we will check out a cool browser called Flock, itz a browser made for socialnetworking !! U read it fine…itz a browser dedicated to socialnetworking sites such as Facebook,Flicker,Youtube,….n so on…
Flock is free n its available for all three leading platforms Windows,Linux and OSX.
I used OSX version of flock…
Lets start explorin Flock –
What is Flock ? ?-
Flock is a webbrowser which i’ll help u stay in touch with your networking sites and simultaneously allow u to browse the web…..Cool isn’t it? To say in simple terms Flock lets u upload a video to youtube, check ur mail, post ur blog, poke ur frnd at facebook all at the same time!!

Testing Flock –
The moment I started using flock i felt like a firefoxy thing,So I checked out flock wiki..n I was right, Flock is built on firerfox code base…It means Flock has all d goodies of firefox!!
Flock gives u a cool flash tutorial..the first time u use it…
The moment u visit a Social networking site flock lets u know tat it can remember tat account.
I stored my facebook, yahoo mail, gmail and blogger account.

[display_adsense ad_type=”300×250″]

Flock shows all your accounts on the left partition,
U can choose any of the accounts n proceed with it..for eg, U can choose the people icon to get into ur facebook account…U can do all basic activities here such as updating ur status, uploading pics, poke ur friend..n much more…
Features galore –
1.Can post blogs using blog editior.
2.Media files in sites gets detected automatically,U can directly link in ur blog.
3.Web clipborad
4.Video uploads
5.Web mail- Notifies u about new mails
n lotz more….
Security –
Am paranoid about security,I spent nearly 70% of my computer hours on security wen I was using windows..I trust scanit browser testing to test my browsers at regular intervals..It performs all tests specific to the type of browser…or all available tests.
I ran all available tests on Flock-
To my surprise It passed the tests with flying colours,
My Norton Security suite for mac proved efficient too!!
I was eager to test my other browsers too…so did I,
Firefox -Scanit test –
Firefox passed all tests !! I expected this…

Safari 4.0 beta -Scanit test –

Safari proved its ready for the battle..
Acid3 tests –
Acid3 is the new criteria released by the w3c org(The guyz who make rules for all thos web languages). It tests the Rendering of webpages by the browser. It scores out of 100…n u know wat? no browser has got 100/100 yet…till Safari 4.0 beta ….came into exsistence ..Time to separate the fact from fiction…
Acid3-Flock-
Flock got 71/100…in Acid3 tests.

Acid3-Firefox-

Firefox got 71/100….in Acid3 tests…no big surprise…
Acid3-Safari 4.0 Beta-
Whola whoopie….100/100 ,did apple increase the pay scale of their engineers ??Man this is rocking.
Conclusion –
well guys…Flock browser is cool..for someone spendin most of their time in Networking sites. The speed is firefoxy like…so no problemmo. The interface is a bit conjested accordin to me.. Well I started to write this blog using the blog editor in flock but later found tat it can embed only web links n not direct images from my desktop  Flock could also bring up some chat widget. A major con is no orkut support I wonder Y…man orkut is supposed to be the happenin thing in social netwoking…May b flock dosen go well with google…coz the default search engine is yahoo!! The final word is, performance of flock can be diagnosed only after long term use..
Well coming to browser knockdown…Safari has done it this time…Iam really glad..Coz safari was the only thing I hated in OSX till now…coz of its reputation wen it comes to security..
Am glad its back in business!!
Seeya guyz don forget to comment !!
